Description

Escaping feels particularly vital at this moment in time. The prevailing climate of the world, in every respect, can be overwhelming. Often, it may seem like an insurmountable burden to carry alone. However, escapism can be inherently whimsical and lighthearted, free from any negativity if you have the right perspective. Ultimately, escapism is whatever you choose to make of it. For me, escapism embodies pure fantasy—a different realm to retreat to whenever the weight of the universe becomes too much to bear. It’s a place filled with creativity and serenity, where a sense of inner peace can truly flourish. A place that feels authentically and completely unadulterated by external forces. A recurring theme in my recent artwork has been the surreal, as well as the unconventional. I’m slowly learning to experiment with who I am as an artist, ultimately trying to find myself in a place where every piece of art I create is identifiable as being mine. Having escapism as this issue’s theme allows me to hone in on what I want my work to be, as well as venture outside of my comfort zone creatively. Stepping outside of what I know is vital to growing as an artist for me. Without true risk, there is virtually no true reward. I hope this issue serves as a reminder to the viewer that escapism isn’t just about distracting yourself. It’s about finding that inner peace so many of us are constantly searching for; it’s about visualizing an ideal reality for yourself, no matter how outlandish or fantastical. Perspective within the mindset can alter realities in ways you wouldn’t think possible.
